CONGLETON DANE PROBUS CLUB
Congleton Dane Probus Club held its first meeting under the new name at the Lion and Swan on Monday the 18th of November. Chairman Roger Smith welcomed the members and also the speaker for the day, Graham Royle, who was to give a talk on the subject of Bees and Honey. Roger referred to his participation at the Remembrance Day Parade in the town and remarked on the fact that it had been very well supported.
He brought up the matter of a necessary change to the constitution of the Club. It was agreed that this was needed and it was decided to have an EGM prior to the next meeting in order to deal with the change.
The use of the new ‘Members’ forum’ on the website was explained in some detail and was well received. Also the pocket list for 2014 was now available and members were able to collect their copy.
Steven Ellwood gave a presentation regarding his proposed trip to Port Sunlight. The members were very supportive of the suggestion and Steven undertook to obtain more details and put the trip on towards the end of March 2014.
Don Newling outlined a few suggestions for a day out in Liverpool. A majority of the members present indicated that they would very interested in the outing and Don volunteered to get more information and bring it back to a meeting in the new year.
Chairman Roger reported that as last year the Club Christmas lunch would follow the December meeting.
Peter Jordan then introduced the speaker who gave an excellent talk on how to keep bees, their habits and habitat and their lifestyle. The members found it absolutely fascinating and asked so many questions that the Chairman eventually had to close the proceedings, Alan Soper gave the vote of thanks which was enthusiastically endorsed by the members.
Sheila Parry will be the guest speaker at the December meeting. She is a talented actress, having appeared in Coronation Street and Emmerdale (amongst others) and will be presenting a series of Christmas readings.
Probus clubs are local to towns and districts and are made up of retired professional and business people. They are non-denominational and the name itself derives from the first three letters from ‘PROfessional and BUSiness’.
