Our speaker next Monday the 16th of April will be Dr Joan Alcock who is an Honorary Fellow of London South Bank University and also a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London. An archaeologist and historian Dr Alcock was one of the prime instigators in bringing to publication the W. B. Stephens 1970 History of Congleton as well as contributing to the chapter on Religion the section on Protestant Non-conformity.

An archaeologist and historian Dr Alcock was one of the prime instigators in bringing to publication the W. B. Stephens 1970 History of Congleton as well as contributing to the chapter on Religion the section on Protestant Non-conformity. Her further Congleton related publications include a ‘History of Congleton’ and ‘Congleton Through Time’, as well as booklets on the town’s charters, its industries including the bell foundry, and the growth of Methodism in the area. Dr Alcock is also a prolific author of books on Roman Britain including ‘Life in Roman Britain and Food in Roman Britain’. In her talk Dr Alcock will, using both local and national examples, look at different types of signs used and explain their origins and meaning.
