Thirty four members of Congleton Dane Probus Club enjoyed a lively meeting at the Lion and Swan on Monday the 17th of February. Vice-chairman Don Newling opened the meeting by welcoming the two guests, Trevor Adams and Tim Gresty, along with the speaker for the day Pete Turner, who was in fact making his third appearance at the Club.

Don also referred to David Dickinson and Ted Bestwick, both of whom were not in the best of health, and on behalf of the club he wished them a speedy recovery.
Most of the meeting was taken up with the organisation of a number of social events, the first of these being the trip to Port Sunlight on Monday the 24th of March being organised by Steven Ellwood. Steven confirmed that he now had sufficient numbers to comfortably fill the coach (with a few more places still available) and gave more details of the actual arrangements for the day itself. It is certainly sounding like a really good day out, the cost is very reasonable and the members are looking forward to it.
Don Newling then gave the members details of a proposed trip to visit the Bulb fields and Rose Exhibition at the Keukenhof in Holland, due to take place early in May. Considerable interest in the proposal was expressed. Don also gave more information on a trip to Liverpool, the day including a guided tour of the new museum along with a tour of the crypt underneath the present Cathedral, evidently designed by Lutyens and well worth a visit. Again many questions were asked, plenty of interest was shown and Don is hoping to put this trip on in July.
He also reported that the Tuesday morning snooker group continues to prosper and that everyone is welcome, irrespective of their skills.
Gordon Watkin brought members up to date with the arrangements for the spring lunch, to be held at the George and Dragon in Holmes Chapel on Friday the second of May.
Pete Turner, the speaker for the day, is a well established conjurer and magician and his talks are always very interesting. He didn’t let us down on this occasion, entertaining the members present with sleight of hand plus explanations of what he was trying to achieve and how some of his tricks were performed along with some interesting tips on how the beat the odds if gambling at either horse races or at a casino. The members thoroughly enjoyed his presentation and Alan Topliss gave the members thanks and appreciation.
