In a change to the originally published talk, our speaker at our next meeting on Monday, 14th July, will be Geoff Scargill who will be presenting a talk, with some accompanying music recordings, entitled “Edward Elgar – the Real Enigma”.

Born in 1857 in a village near Malvern, Worcestershire, to parents who ran a music shop, Edward Elgar was a self-taught composer of orchestral and choral works.  Despite being English and his repertoire establishing popularity in England, his music had largely Continental European influences.  Coming from humble origins, he remained uneasy in the class-conscious society of Victorian and Edwardian Britain.

Geoff is a retired teacher and magistrate with interests in politics, history, cricket and music, and gives regular talks to raise funds for research at the Christie Hospital.

Congleton Dane Probus Club is a friendly group of retired professional and business men and women.  Anyone wishing to come along to the meeting as a guest can contact the club through the Contact Page of this web site, or if preferred they can ring 07717 375505 to speak to a current member.
