For our first meeting in 2026 on the 12th January, the invited speaker is Mike Tingle who will be returning following previous enjoyable talks on local Congleton histories. This time, Mike is drawing on his background in chemistry education and fascination with the unexpected success of random discoveries for his talk entitled “Serendipitous Science”.
Scientific experiments do not always yield the expected results. It is unwise to ignore ‘rogue’ results, putting them down to human error, faulty materials or equipment malfunction. Many familiar products (Bakelite, Penicillin, Polythene, Teflon, Microwave Ovens for example) and scientific principles have their origins in failed experiments. Mike will be telling us why.
Congleton Dane Probus Club is a friendly group of retired professional or business men and women – basically anybody who has held positions of responsibility during their working lives. Monthly talks are invariably very well presented, sometimes humorous, sometimes informative, and always entertaining. Anyone wishing to come along to the meeting as a guest can contact the club through the Contact Page of this web site.
