Congleton Dane Probus Club held their monthly meeting at the Lion and Swan on Monday the 17th of March and the meeting was particularly well attended along with guest Miles Johnson and also the speaker for the day David McCaddon.

Chairman Roger Smith opened the meeting by welcoming the guest and the speaker and then invited Geoff Parry to give a resume of the life of John Winterbottom who sadly passed away in February. Geoff gave a very interesting outline of John’s life and interests, this was followed up by Chairman Roger and the members then stood for a minute’s silence in John’s memory.
David Heard then introduced Trevor Adams as a potential new member and his membership of the Club was unanimously approved.
On the social scene, Don Newling informed the members that because of the lack of time to prepare the details and inform the members he was putting the trip to Holland back to next year and would look to start organising this in September.
Steven Ellwoods’ trip to Port Sunlight, due on the 24th of March was now well subscribed and the coach was full.
Don explained that plans for his proposed outing to Liverpool for July was well advanced, that a few details had yet to be dealt with but that the date of the 14th of July was confirmed and more details would be available at the meeting in April.
Gordon Watkin confirmed that all the arrangements for the spring lunch on the 2nd of May were now in place and Paul reminded the members that the next meeting of the dining group would be on Monday the 31st of March, 12.30 at the Brownlow Inn as usual.
The speaker for the day was David McCaddon, a computer programming expert who had been involved with the setting up of police data-bases, starting at the time of the search for the Yorkshire Ripper and eventually becoming involved with setting up similar systems for police forces in many different parts of the world. The talk proved very to be interesting, provoking many questions, and Peter Jordan expressed thanks on behalf of the members present.
Peter Flack, the speaker for the April meeting will be giving a talk entitled ‘I’m not lost’, a comment on hikers losing their way on his farm near to Whaley Bridge. He is reputed to be extremely amusing and so it should be a good meeting.
The members were reminded that the next meeting will take place on the 14th of April, a week earlier than usual due to the Easter holiday being on the 21st of that month.
Probus clubs are local to towns and districts and are made up of retired business and professional people. We meet once a month for a regular meeting and to listen to an invited speaker, followed by lunch at the hotel for those who wish to stay. During the year many other activities are arranged such as visits to places of interest, television studios, factory sites, museums etc. plus days out at the races, sports events ranging from snooker (regularly) to ten-pin-bowling, canal boat cruises, countryside walks, club lunches and group holidays.
