Our speaker next week will be Mike Hewitt who was born in Holland and his family came back to England in 1940 due to the Second World War. He joined the Welsh Guards, attending Sandhurst for 18 months and then joined BP, following which he emigrated to Chicago and worked as a Christian minister, looking after alcoholics and the homeless.

Our speaker on Monday the 21st of May will be Mark Thomas who been involved in fund-raising for the RNLI for well over a decade and since leaving work four years ago he has joined the RNLI Youth Education Team and has seen over 10,000 young people across Cheshire, helping them understand how to stay safe near the water.

Our speaker next Monday the 16th of April will be Dr Joan Alcock who is an Honorary Fellow of London South Bank University and also a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London.  An archaeologist and historian Dr Alcock was one of the prime instigators in bringing to publication the W. B. Stephens 1970 History of Congleton as well as contributing to the chapter on Religion the section on Protestant Non-conformity.

Our speaker on Monday 19th March at the Lion & Swan will be Nigel Linge, who is Professor of Telecommunications at the University of Salford with over 30 years experience as a member of academic staff. He is an electronic engineer by profession who specialises in data communication networks and their applications. His research, which has a strong industry involvement, covers 5G mobile, location and context based services, communication protocols, the delivery of multimedia services, network design and architectures.

Our speaker at the Congleton Dane Probus Club meeting at the Lion and Swan on Monday the 20th of November will be Professor Ian Morison on the subject of  ‘Are we Alone’.

Professor Morison is the Emeritus Gresham Professor of Astronomy at the Jodrell Bank Observatory, is a past president of the UK’s ‘Society for Popular Astronomy’  and is a founder member and now patron of the Macclesfield Astronomical Society.

September 2017 news

Our speaker on Monday the 18th of September will be Bernard Loveday who is a physiologist, studied at Kings College and after that at the Radcliffe Infirmary in Oxford. From then on he has carried out research on cardiovascular disease in all its many guises, He joined ICI to continue and extend their research into surgical techniques and valve replacement, with additional clinical interaction with Liverpool and Manchester.

The speaker at the Congleton Dane Probus Club meeting on Monday the 21st of August  will be Glynn Williams from a company called ‘Collective Legal Solutions’ and he will be giving us a talk on the subject of looking after your nest egg, inheritance tax, lasting Power of Attorney and how to generally plan for your future financial requirements.

The speaker at our meeting on Monday the 19th of June will be Bob Kermeen and his subject will be ‘Who killed Dr. Kelly?’ Bob writes under the pseudonym of R.W. Kay and has previously given us talks on the subjects of ‘War Gaming’ and also ‘Iraq from WW1 to Saddam Hussein’.

Our speaker for the 15th of May will be John Doughty, who is actually a registered tour guide and is a Lancastrian, born in Blackpool and who has lived all his professional life in the Manchester area. After a career in education where he taught in State schools, Independent schools, Outdoor Education Centres and University Departments of Continuing Education, he qualified as a Registered Tour Guide. As a member of the Institute of Tourist Guiding, and an Accredited Guide of the Manchester Museum of Science and Industry, he offers a number of illustrated talks and guided walks.

Congleton Dane Probus Club held their monthly meeting at the Lion and Swan on Monday the 23rd of April and Vice Chairman Trevor Adams  and opened the meeting by welcoming the members and Cat Allen, the speaker for the day.
