For our next meeting on Monday, 14th September, Roy Hoerty is returning as our invited speaker following his entertaining talk in October about lesser known histories of the British Monarchy. This time, his talk will be on The Royal British Legion.
Mr Hoerty has been a Registered Tour Guide for NW England for 30 years. He is a member of the British Guild of Tourist Guides and the International Guild of Battlefield Guides, and is Past President of the Institute of Tourist Guides, the Standards body for Tour Guiding in Britain.
This year marks the 105th anniversary of the Royal British Legion, famous for the Poppy Appeal. Did you know that the Scottish Poppy is different from the English Poppy? If you don’t like red, you can also buy a white, black or purple Poppy! The two main people responsible for founding the RBL were a Field Marshall and an ordinary soldier. The name British Legion was only one of 49 names put forward. The Poppy was the idea of two women – one French, and, the other American. Rather strangely, today the Remembrance flower of France is not a Poppy.
