Congleton Dane Probus Club held their Annual General Meeting at the Lion and Swan on Monday the 19th of October and chairman Don Newling welcomed the members to this his last meeting.
Congleton Dane Probus Club held their Annual General Meeting at the Lion and Swan on Monday the 19th of October and chairman Don Newling welcomed the members to this his last meeting.
The minutes of the previous AGM were read and approved and Paul Nadin thanked the members for their help and support during the years that he had served as secretary to the Club. He also thanks Vaidy Iyer for taking over the post.
Brian Cook presented the accounts for the year which showed a healthy surplus. The accounts were accepted by the members with thanks to Brian for his work and also to Alan Topliss for acting as the Club auditor. It was decided to leave the subscription level unchanged.
Don Newling then thanked the committee and the members for their help and support during his time in office and said how enjoyable the year had been. He felt that it had been a successful year, the attendance figures had been good and he thanked particularly those members who had organised social events during the year.
John Wolstenholme gave a report on the annual golf day with Congleton and District Probus Club and Don Newling explained some unusual methods of playing and scoring at the snooker group. Don Newling then presented the retiring Club officers with gifts.
Don Newling then proposed Don Cole to be the new chairman; this was seconded by Paul Nadin and approved unanimously by the members. He then presented Don Cole with the chain of office.
Don Cole thanked Don Newling for all the work he had done, congratulated him on a successful year and presented him with his past chairman’s tie. He then proposed Paul Hibbert to be the next vice chairman, Mervin White to be the new treasurer, Vaidy Iyer to take on the job of secretary and Trevor Adams so take on the role of speaker’s secretary. All the nominations were seconded and approved unanimously.
He also proposed that Denny Stevens be re-elected to the committee, to be joined by Ted Bestwick and Bryan Booth and that Doug MacKenzie be invited to continue as lunch organiser. Again all the nominations were seconded and approved by the members.
Doug Mackenzie gave out final information about the autumn lunch, confirmed the details for the Christmas lunch after the meeting on the 14th of December and gave the date and venue for the spring lunch, this to be held at the Vicarage at Holmes Chapel on Thursday the 17th of March and to be based on a St Patrick’s Day theme.
Peter Jordan informed the meeting of the ill-health of several members and confirmed that Philip Roberts will give the talk on the 14th of December and the subject will be ‘The hallmarking of precious metals’.
Peter Jordan then organised a very successful quiz and Don Cole closed the meeting at 12.00.
The speaker at the November meeting will be George Nolan and his subject will be ‘The man in black’. He is evidently a retired football referee so it should be interesting!
