New Chairman and change of name.

Congleton Probus Two Club held its annual general meeting at the Lion and Swan on Monday the 21st of October. The meeting was very lively and well attended and two new members, Mervin White and Viady Iyer, were welcomed to the club.

Chairman Eifion thanked Gordon Watkin for an excellent autumn lunch, which had been held at the Manor House in Alsager and had proved very successful. It had been organised to coincide with the twentieth anniversary celebration of the club, had been very well supported by the members and their guests and had proved to be a very enjoyable occasion with entertainment provided by the Congleton U3A Songsters. The Chairman also thanked Brian Cook for his organisation of the annual Probus golf day, greatly enjoyed by all those who took part and now an established part of the annual Probus calendar. Probus Two did win the day but it was the taking part and not the winning that was the important part of the day.
Harvey Meeke was able to thank the members for all their help and support during his recent illness and everyone was pleased to see him back and on the way to recovery.
This being an annual general meeting the treasurer Brian Cook submitted the annual accounts to the meeting. These showed a healthy situation, the fees were left at the current level and Brian was thanked for his work and contribution as was Alan Topliss for his help in auditing the accounts.
During the year the subject of the club name from Congleton Probus Two Club to Congleton Dane Probus Club had been discussed and approved and the change was now ratified at the annual general meeting. The change of name received unanimous approval and will apply from the date of the AGM. The chairman thanked the committee and the members for their help with this change.
Chairman Eifion thanked the members for their involvement during the year, particularly those who had organised and participated in the varied programme of social outings and events.
He paid special thanks to the committee, acknowledging their help and support during the year. He also paid tribute to those members who had passed on during his year, made mention of and welcomed the new members and then handed the chairmanship over to Roger Smith, thanking him for taking on the role and wishing him every success during his year in office.
Chairman Roger thanked Eifion for all the hard work that he had put in during his year on office and thanked the members for electing him to the office for a second time.
The club officers were re-elected with Don Newling taking on the role of vice-chairman for the forthcoming year and Alan Topliss was re-elected club Auditor for another year.
The meeting was followed by an interesting quiz organised by Peter Jordan and much enjoyed by the members, particularly following their request for the questions to be made a little easier this year please! The winners were duly applauded and many of the members stayed for a very enjoyable lunch.
Congleton Dane Probus Club was founded some 20 years ago as Congleton Probus Two Club and we meet once a month to listen to an invited speaker. However during the year many other activities are arranged, such as visits to places of interest (e.g. television studios, factory sites, museums etc.), days-out at the races, sports events ranging from snooker (regularly) to ten-pin-bowling, canal boat cruises, countryside walks, club lunches with spouses invited and group holidays.
